With seemingly infinite information available in the world today, we get vulnerable to getting confused and disoriented. You throw away a huge amount of time and money to get wisdom but you fail to upgrade yourself. You fail to grow.
Who is an Learning junkie?
If you read a lot of books, hear podcasts, watch a lot of motivational stuffs, buy a set of courses to uplift yourself, you are one step ahead of the other people around you. Every now and then you are interested in attending the best seminars or webinars. You are a learning junkie!
However, there is a massive con to it. You are in the hunt for knowledge without any intention to apply it! You are constipated. You get out of balance when you take in too much. You land yourself in the island of chaos!
This article on how to stop being a learning junkie will point out your mistakes and help you conquer information the right way.
Best ways to stop being a learning junkie
1.Set deadlines for completing whatever information you have bought.
Instead of running away to another course or webinar, reflect on what you have learnt. You may buy a course and never complete it!
Instead of squandering away your money and time, sit down and set strict deadlines for completing it step by step. If a course consists of a series of classes, make sure to set a deadline of completing a class everyday.
The reward system gets extremely important here. You can always reward yourself when you have completed your daily objectives. Avoid moving on to the next piece of information unless you are fully satisfied that you are informed well about the previous one.
2.Avoid over-stuffing shelves
Stuffing your shelves with a variety of self help books even when you are not reading them is akin to building a collection of showpieces! Purchasing books merely for flaunting collections will not contribute to your growth.
We are easily swayed away by best sellers and attractive cover designs. We forget the very purpose of buying a book. Even if you want to read, you are distracted by another best seller in your shelf.
Over stuffing only leads to chaos and confusion in your mind. Move on to the next book only if you have finished the previous one.
3.Avoid learning same thing twice
This habit of avoiding to learn the same thing more than once becomes crucial. Without acting on the wisdom gained in the previous seminar, we rush to another one. For instance, you may go to a seminar on happiness and rush to another 4 seminars without acting on the first one.
Compile a list of whatever you have learnt and carry that list everywhere you go. Whenever you are tempted to waste money and time on something you have learnt or not sure about, pull out the list and have a look. In other words, measure your progress.
This will stop you from being a learning junkie.
4.Start taking small steps
Do not build castles in the air. It is great to dream but learn to be pragmatic. Big dreams can be achieved when you start small. Every little, seemingly insignificant tasks, when done over time yield gargantuan results.
When you achieve small objectives, you feel confident enough to proceed to a more difficult objective. This confidence can tear down walls that stand as hurdles in your way to your goals in life.
You learn to walk first and then run.
Now you will be able to reflect on how much time and money you actually waste on your improvement. Running from information to information is never the solution. The solution is putting it into action. Stop being an information junkie and start upgrading yourself.
